Diane Kay goes to RBA
in Anaheim
The recent
Retail Bakers Association (RBA) was held at the Anaheim Convention Center in
Anaheim, CA from 4/05/03 - 04/07/03. We joined Sugar Petals® in exhibiting
their exquisite flowers to the RBA attendees.
Diane Kay, a
professional cake decorator from Newburg, NY, demonstrated various
applications of Sugar Petals® as well as various cake designs in rolled
fondant. EC Chronicle is featuring the cakes created by Diane Kay during the
RBA convention.

Once you walk into the exhibit hall, it's
only natural to follow your nose. The aroma of freshly baked breads,
doughnuts, danish pastries & coffee was lingering in every inch of the hall.
Past all that and the various baking equipment and supplies, were cake
exhibits. One section had cakes that were judged by various well known
cake decorators and another section was dedicated to display cakes from
Bakeries from the area. Below are a few pictures from these exhibits.

From the ICES Newsletter
Editor . . .
Grace McMillan
Wayne Yake of ExpressCreations has been very
gracious in allowing me to use this medium to extol the virtues of an
extraordinary organization dedicated to the love and sharing of sugar art.
I gotta tell you, folks, if you have not yet heard of
ICES, it is my distinct pleasure to
introduce you to a organization to which you will absolutely love belonging!
The acronym ICES stands for a wonderful
organization called the “International Cake Exploration Societé” and it is
for everyone – any man, woman or child who is interested in sugar art in any
form. Our organization includes home decorators, master decorators,
professional decorators, famous artisans, teachers, shop owners and
wholesalers. My fifteen-year-old daughter is a member, as is my
sixty-nine-year-old mother-in-law, and both truly love being a part of their
international ICES family.
Ohhhhh,
but let me tell you of the benefits! Yearly
ICES dues entitle you to twelve months of membership. You will receive a
24-page newsletter every month, with the exception of September. ICES
newsletters contain at least 18 full-color photographs of cakes featuring
ICES decorators

From the ICES Newsletter
Editor . . .
(continued)
(amateur to professional),
recipes, annual Convention information, articles by ICES members for ICES members, hints, tips,
tricks, patterns, lesson plans, targeted-audience advertising (ask
ExpressCreations how well their advertisement has performed!) … and the list
goes on and on.
As the Newsletter Editor, may I say that I earnestly solicit such articles
and submissions for publication? I would love to hear from new members and I
truly love to feature ICES members’ cakes and decorating techniques … got
photographs? Send them to me! If your articles and/or photographs are chosen
for publication, your work will be featured internationally to over 4,000
readers.
But that’s not all! Every year ICES holds an Annual Show and Convention that
includes an absolutely breathtakingly spectacular display of sugar art.
Techniques of cake decorating, candy making, chocolate, gum paste,
pastillage and other forms of sugar art are not only on display, but are
also demonstrated by the skilled artists who created them! This means
that you get to see so many of the techniques that are the foundation for
the creation of these displays. There is an authors’ area at the Convention
where you may purchase books and speak directly to the authors. New cake and
candy-related products are made available by the wholesalers and retailers
attending the show. Here you may buy not only the latest tools needed for
your art, but also the products necessary to enhance your own skills.
This year, the ICES Annual Show and Convention will be held July 31 to
August 3 in Las Vegas, NV!
Ah, but wait. ICES Membership gives you even more. Every year ICES promotes
the “Art of Cake Decorating” by awarding scholarships (classes taught by
ICES approved teachers) to deserving persons. If you, or anyone you know,
would like to apply for a scholarship, you may contact any Board Member,
Representative or Scholarship Chairman for an application. Applications must
reach the Scholarship Chairman by January 15.
There are entirely too many benefits to ICES membership to enumerate in one
short article. Have I piqued your interest? If so, contact the Membership
Coordinator, Gayle McMillan at 318-746-2812 or e-mail her at
gvmcmillan@aol.com.
She will take your name and address, tell you all about ICES membership and
collect your dues over the phone (with credit card information), and you
will start receiving your ICES newsletter with the next published issue.
And if you have suggestions and/or submissions for publication, please feel
free to call or write me at the contact information below. I would be
delighted to hear from you, whatever the reason!
